Valentine's Day Card with Detachable Heart Frame Magnet

This week, my mom challenged me to use the Stampin' Up Hearts & Posies Stamp Set for a card or project. I'll be honest, this stamp set doesn't thrill me when I look at it, but I love a good crafting challenge. Through my stamping experience I have discovered that stamp sets are like wedding gowns, there is no way to tell if you'll like it until you "try it on." While I'm still not a huge fan of the overly curly font, this stamp set is sure to be one that I use over and over again. The large heart outline stamp is so versatile and pretty. That stamp alone is enough to clear some shelf space and add this set to my collection.

Materials Used

**A few items used are missing from this photo.

Directions

  • Cut a piece of Great White 8 1/2" x 11" paper in half to create two 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" pieces.
  • Fold one piece in half to create a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" card. Alternatively, you could use pre-made cards.
  • Cut a piece of Designer Series Paper - Love Impressions paper 4" x 5 1'4" - Put aside for later
  • Cut a scrap of Red Heartthrob Cardstock to 1/2" x 5 1/4"
  • Stamp the Love with 3 Hearts stamp from Stampin' Up's A Light Heart Stamp Set onto a scrap of Great White Card Stock. Punch out image with Stampin Up Large Tag Punch. Punch out an additional Large Tag out of a scrap of Red Heartthrob Cardstock
  • Using a Versamark Stamp Pad, stamp the Large Heart Outline Stamp from the Hearts & Posies Stamp Set. As you will be embossing this image, it is important to make sure you get the stamp nice and juicy and to apply the embossing powder immediately after it is stamped. The embossing powder needs to be applied while the ink is still wet so that it can stick. Using a Powder Pal Glitter/Embossing Tray (or a folded piece of scrap paper) tap off all additional embossing powder and put it back into the container for later use. Heat the embossing powder using a Heat Tool. You will see the embossing powder melt and raise - heat until it is all melted and consistent in appearance.
  • With an exacto knife, CAREFULLY cut out the center heart. Slow and steady is the way to go here....or you will end up bleeding or with a mangled heart. When the center has been cut out, use scissors or an exacto knife to cut the out edge of the heart. This will be the front of the detachable magnet.
  • Attach embossed heart frame to the photo of your choice using dry adhesive. I used a photo from my wedding in 2010. Trim the photo to match the heart shape. If you'd like to, you can cut an additional heart to be the back of the magnet. I did this to reinforce the photo and to cover up some writing that was on the back of the photo. Attach magnet to back.
  • Attach the 1/2" x 5 1/4" piece of Red Heartthrob Cardstock to the top of the cut Love Impressions piece using dry adhesive. Cut a piece of Red & White Baker's Twine to approx 6 1/2" and attach with scotch tape to back of paper. Attach embellished Love Impressions paper to the front of the folded card.
  • Use 2 mini clothespins to clip your photo magnet to the Red & White Baker's Twine
  • Layer the punched tags and attach a scrap of ribbon to them using a brad. I used the red and white stitched grosgrain ribbon from the Mistletoe Bundle and a random silver brad.
  • And there you go, a beautiful card with a detachable framed photo magnet. Make sure to tell your recipient to remove the magnet!

Small Gift Tags - Monogram and Valentine's Day

I am very lucky to say that I have a husband that supports my crafting 100% - he watches our son, remodels my craft room, and provides financial crafting support! One way that I repay him for this support is a promise not to buy any greeting cards or gift tags. If you were to purchase one $3.99 greeting card a month for a year it would cost you around $50 a year. We haven't purchased any gift tags or greeting cards in years!!! You're welcome honey....doesn't that make up for some of the money I've spent on supplies?? :)

Below are a few small gift tags that I've made over the past few weeks.

Happy Valentine's Gift Tag Supplies

DCWV Green Stack - 12 x 12 Stack or Mat Stack
Stampin Up Large Tag Punch
12" x 12" Great White Cardstock
Happy Heart Day Stamp Set
Stampin' Write Markers
Stamp-a-ma-jig
Dry Adhesive - I used 1/4" Wonder Tape
Stampin Up 5/8" Striped Grosgrain Ribbon in Kiwi Kiss
Paper Cutter
Scissors
Scrap of Twine - Baker's Twine would also be adorable!

  •  Using a paper cutter of your choice cut a piece of Great White Cardstock to 5" x 2 1/2", fold in half to create a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" gift tag or mini card.
  • Cut a piece of colored or patterned paper or card stock to 2 1/4" x 2 1/4". I used a piece from the Green Stack by DCWV.
  • Cut a piece of
5/8" Striped Grosgrain Ribbon in Kiwi Kiss  about 3 1/2" long and attach to patterned paper using a dry adhesive. Tape ends behind the back and attach to white card so that there is approximately 1/4" of white showing on each side.
  • Stamp the tag image from the Happy Heart Day Stamp Set with Jet Black StazOn ink and punch out using Stampin Up Large Tag Punch
  • Use a small hole punch or crop-a-dile to punch a hole in the tag and thread a scrap piece of twine through and tie.
  • Attach tag on top of ribbon with dry adhesive or Stampin' Up Dimensional.

Monogram Gift Tag Supplies

DCWV Green Stack - 12 x 12 Stack or Mat Stack
12" x 12" Great White Cardstock
Stampin' Write Markers
Stamp-a-ma-jig
Dry Adhesive - I used 1/4" Wonder Tape
Stampin Up 5/8" Striped Grosgrain Ribbon in Kiwi Kiss
Katie G It's a Boy Stamp
Alphabet Set of your Choice
Paper Cutter
Scissors

Honestly, I don't really like how this gift tag came out....but, let's be real here....not all crafts turn out exactly how you plan it. I do like the idea of it though, and I feel like it's a great example of how to utilize Stampin' Write Markers...so I'll go through it anyway and hope that you get better results! :)

  • Follow the first three steps from above.
  • Use a circle punch, circle template, personal electronic cutter to cut a circle out of Great White Cardstock. Note: This is where I went wrong. I used a 1 3/4" Circle Punch which proved to be much too large for the stamp I chose. Next time, I will use a 1 1/4" Circle Punch so that it is much closer to the size of the stamp.
  • Using a Stampin' Write Markers (I show Green Galore above, but I ended up using Night of Navy and was happy I chose a darker color), color just the outside decorative edge of the It's a Boy Stamp. Use a Stamp-a-ma-jig to position the stamp in the center of the circle. Before stamping on the paper "huff" on the stamp so that your hot breath re-wets the ink.
  • Next take a large Alphabet Letter (I used "M" for Matt, my sweet hubby) and stamp in the center of the decorative circle. I used the same Night of Navy Stampin' Write Markers to color the "M" because I don't have a Night of Navy Stamp Pad.
  • Attach the circle to the card.

Heart Pennant Mini Card

12" x 12" Great White Cardstock
Heart Pennant Stamp
12" x 12" Core'dinations Cardstock - Red Rose
Stamp-a-ma-jig
Pink or Red Ink Pad
Jet Black StazOn Ink Pad
Paper Cutter
Stampin' Up A Light Heart Stamp Set

  •  Cut a piece of Great White Cardstock to 3" x 6" - Folded in half this will create a 3" x 3" Mini Card. Cut another piece of Great White paper to 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" - this will be the front of the card.
  • Cut a piece of Core'dinations Red Rose Cardtock to 2 3/4" x 2 3/4"
  • Using the Stamp-a-ma-jig, position the Heart Pennant Stamp in the top left corner using a red or pink stamp pad.
  • Using Jet Black StazOn Ink, stamp the "Love You" portion of the Love you with 3 hearts stamp from the A Light Heart Stamp Set. Position so that the three hearts are stamped on a scrap of paper rather on the face of the card.
  • Gently run the edges of the face of the card along the stamp pad. This will give it a little bit more dimension when placed on the Red Rose paper.
  • Finally, layer all three pieces together using an adhesive of your choice.

HAPPY HEART DAY - Valentine's Day Card

One of my favorite stamp sets is Happy Heart Day by Stampin' Up. Without fail, I make at least a few cards from this set every year. I made this Valentine's Day Card to send to my in-laws.

Materials Used

Big Shot Cutting Machine
Sizzix XL Die A2 Card with Circle
12" x 12" Great White Cardstock
Martha Stewart White Lace Ribbon Set
Stampin Up Large Tag Punch
Stampin' Up Patterns Love DSP
Stampin' Write Markers
Happy Heart Day Stamp Set
Martha Stewart Glue Pen
Stampin Up Dazzling Diamonds Glitter
Jet Black StazOn Ink Pad
Paper Cutter
Dry Adhesive - I used 1/4" Wonder Tape
Stampin' Up Dimensionals
Stamp-a-ma-jig

Directions

  • Using the Big Shot Cutting Machine and the Sizzix XL Die A2 Card with Circle cut one full card using half of a sheet of 12" x 12" Great White Cardstock. Set Aside.
  • Using the Big Shot Cutting Machine and the Sizzix XL Die A2 Card with Circle cut a partial card (the Circle side) out of Stampin' Up Patterns Love DSP. Using a paper cutter carefully trim the die cut so that you have only the front of the card.
  • Cut 2 pieces of Martha Stewart White Lace Ribbon Set (6 1/2" & 5"), and attach to top and right side of DSP using dry adhesive on front and scotch tape on the back.
  • On a piece of Great White Paper, stamp the Happy Valentine's Day Tag image with Jet Black StazOn Ink Pad.
  • Using the Stampin Up Large Tag Punch, carefully align the image with the punch and punch out image.
  • Using a Glue Pen, carefully apply glue to the hearts on the tag. Using a piece of folded scrap paper or a Powder Pal, carefully apply Stampin Up Dazzling Diamonds Glitter. (Tip: I like to place a piece of scrap paper over the loose glitter and press down to set the glitter.) Next, remove all remaining loose glitter and replace it into the container.
  • Use Stampin' Up Dimensionals to attach the tag to the corner where the lace ribbons meet. Then attach DSP to the Card using adhesive of your choice.
  • Stamp the Mouse Holding Heart image onto Stamp-a-ma-jig. Use the stamped image to align the Mouse on the inside of the card so that the phrase sits below the circle cut-out. Use the Stamp-a-ma-jig to stamp the image.
  • I used Stampin' Write markers to color the mouse.

Candy Conversation Valentine Card

Materials Used

Great White 8 1/2" x 11" Cardstock
Stampin' Up Patterns Love DSP
Stampin' Write Markers
Stampin' Up - Candy Conversations Rubber Stamp
Black StazOn Ink Pad
Stamp-a-ma-jig
Heart Punch
Pink Ribbon - I used a scrap of 1/8" ribbon, but this ribbon would also be nice!
Paper Cutter
Dry Adhesive - I used 1/4" Wonder Tape
Bone Folder
Scotch Tape

Directions

Paper Cuts

  • Fold one piece in half to create a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" card. Alternatively, you could use pre-made cards.
  • Cut a piece of Stampin' Up Patterns Love DSP paper 4" x 5 1'4" - Put aside for later
  • Cut a piece of Great White paper 3 1/4" x 4 1/2" - This will be the piece of paper that is stamped.

Stamping

  • Use the Stampin' Write Markers (I used Cameo Coral, Rich Razzleberry, and Lavender Lace) to color the Candy Hearts, and stamp on a scrap piece of Great White paper. (Tip: After coloring each heart, "huff" on the rubber stamp. Your hot breath will re-wet the ink.)
  • Clean your stamp and repeat the stamping using different colors on different hearts.
  • Using a heart punch or scissors, carefully cut out each of the 10 colored candy hearts. Place aside for later.

  • Using a Black StazOn Ink Pad, Stamp the Candy Conversations image on a Stamp-a-ma-jig. Use the Stamp-a-ma-jig to alight the image approximately 1" below the top of the 3 1/4" x 4 1/2" Great White Paper. Using the Stamp-a-ma-jig as a guide, take a piece of scrap paper and block the words "Be Mine, Valentine" and the arrow. Remove the plastic piece of the Stamp-a-ma-jig carefully and stamp the row of 5 hearts.

  • Repeat the stamping above, but this time, allow the words "Be Mine, Valentine" and arrow to be stamped.

  • Using the colored hearts cut out in a previous step, glue on top of the black stamped hearts using glue or dry adhesive.
  • Attach the 3 1/4" x 4 1/2" stamped paper to the piece of Stampin' Up Patterns Love DSP paper.
  • Using scotch tape on the back, attach a 6" piece of 1/8" ribbon to the paper, then attach the Patterns Love Paper to the front of the card.

  • Tie a small bow to the bottom of the ribbon.

And Voila! A sweet little Valentine's Day Card for your sweetie!
